On Monday, the US announced a commitment of nearly $6 billion in combined security and economic aid to Ukraine, reaffirming its ongoing support for the country’s defense amidst the conflict with Russia.
“I am proud to announce nearly $2.5 billion in security assistance for Ukraine as its people continue to defend their independence and freedom against Russian aggression,” President Joe Biden said in a statement, emphasizing the US’s dedication to Ukraine’s sovereignty and security.
The $2.5 billion security package includes $1.25 billion for immediate military needs and $1.22 billion allocated through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI). This aid encompasses air defense systems, artillery, and other essential weaponry to strengthen Ukraine’s battlefield capabilities and prepare for winter operations.
“The United States has united global support for the Ukrainian people,” Biden added, highlighting his administration’s efforts to deliver assistance promptly while replenishing US defense supplies.
Additionally, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen announced the disbursement of $3.4 billion in direct budget support to Ukraine. This economic aid, coordinated with international allies, is aimed at maintaining vital government services and advancing reforms in law enforcement, anti-corruption measures, and institutional transparency.
The funds represent the final allocation under the bipartisan Ukraine Security Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2024. Yellen also emphasized the utilization of proceeds from Russia’s immobilized assets under the G7 Extraordinary Revenue Acceleration initiative.
“Ukraine’s success is a core national interest for America,” Yellen stated, linking Ukraine’s defense efforts to the global democratic order and US security.
