Former US President and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Jimmy Carter dies at 100

Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, passed away at the age of 100 at his home in Plains, Georgia, on Sunday. Known for his humble beginnings as a Georgia peanut farmer, Carter’s presidency (1977-1981) was marked by key achievements, including the 1978 Camp David Accords that brokered peace between Israel and Egypt. Despite economic struggles and the Iran hostage crisis, his post-presidency years were defined by humanitarian efforts, earning him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his global advocacy.

President Joe Biden declared January 9 as a national day of mourning to honor Carter. World leaders, including Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, praised Carter for his humility and commitment to peace.

Carter’s foreign policy legacy includes significant contributions to the Middle East peace process and the normalization of US-China relations. After leaving office, he gained global recognition for his efforts to promote human rights and democracy, while his Carter Center worked on conflict resolution and election monitoring worldwide.

Carter faced health challenges in his later years, including melanoma, and chose hospice care in 2023. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rosalynn, in November 2023.
