Mauritania, EU sign €100M deal for development and migration control

Mauritania and the European Union signed a €100 million ($103.6 million) agreement on Thursday to promote development and tackle irregular migration.

The agreement was finalized in Nouakchott during a meeting between Mauritania’s Minister of Economy and Finance, Sidi Ahmed Ould Abouh, and European Commissioner for International Partnerships, Jozef Sikela, as reported by the Mauritanian News Agency.

Ould Abouh stated that the funds will focus on supporting development, fostering social cohesion and stability, stimulating economic growth, improving healthcare, and addressing the root causes of migration. The initiative also aims to strengthen institutions combatting irregular migration while safeguarding the rights of refugees and migrants.

“This direct budget support reflects the international community’s confidence in our national mechanisms,” he added.

Sikela highlighted green hydrogen development as a key funding priority, citing its potential to drive economic growth, create jobs, and attract European investment. He affirmed the EU’s commitment to fulfilling its promises to Mauritania.

Mauritania has become a critical transit point for African migrants, particularly in the northern city of Nouadhibou, a hub for those seeking to reach Europe. The country has also formed agreements with European nations, including Spain, to manage migration more effectively.

The EU’s focus on Mauritania has intensified as relations with other Sahel countries have strained in recent years.
