Balochistan assembly considers bill to curb child marriage

Ghazala Gola, Deputy Speaker of the Balochistan Assembly, highlighted the importance of involving all relevant stakeholders in the creation of legislation to prevent child marriage and protect children’s rights.

Chairing a high-level meeting on Wednesday, Ms. Gola was accompanied by Ayesha Raza Farooq, Chairperson of the National Commission for the Rights of Children (NCRC), as well as assembly members Hadiya Nawaz Behrani and Kulsoom Niaz Baloch. Representatives from various organizations also took part in the discussions.

The meeting focused on reviewing the draft bill aimed at preventing child marriage in Balochistan. Key topics discussed included setting a minimum marriage age, imposing penalties for violations, and ensuring gender-specific protections within the proposed law.

Ms. Farooq emphasized that the bill’s purpose was to safeguard the future of children and uphold their fundamental rights. The participants reaffirmed their commitment to addressing the issue and agreed to continue deliberating on the next steps.
