Nick Jonas has faced criticism from fans after a playful exchange with Elon Musk on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. The interaction quickly sparked backlash, with many fans interpreting it as an endorsement of the controversial billionaire.
The exchange began when Musk shared a GIF of the Jonas Brothers spinning around a coffee table with the caption, “My, how the tables have turned!” in response to a claim by Tesla Owners Silicon Valley that Tesla profits had surged by 100% after Donald Trump’s election. In reply, Jonas quoted Musk’s post, referencing the Jonas Brothers’ 2006 cover of “Year 3000” with the playful line, “Take us to the Year 3000.”
However, fans quickly criticized the interaction, viewing it as aligning Jonas with Musk. Some fans sarcastically commented, calling it “a choice,” while others expressed disappointment, referencing Jonas’s past controversies, including the Jonas Brothers’ breakup in 2013. Additionally, some pointed out that “Year 3000” was originally a song by British band Busted, which added fuel to the criticism.
While Jonas has generally kept his political views private, he previously supported Democratic President Joe Biden in 2020 and protested North Carolina’s controversial “bathroom bill” in 2016. Meanwhile, Musk continues to make headlines for his polarizing actions, and his connection with figures like Trump has deepened public divides.
The backlash against Jonas underscores growing public scrutiny of celebrities’ interactions on social media, especially when engaging with divisive figures like Musk. Representatives for Jonas have not yet commented.
