Japan pledges $27.5M in humanitarian assistance for Afghanistan

On Tuesday, Japan announced a $27.5 million humanitarian aid package for Afghanistan.

The Japanese Embassy in Kabul made the announcement following an appeal by the World Food Programme (WFP) for funds to assist Afghans facing severe hunger.

“Pleased to announce that @JapanGov ???????? has decided on an additional 27.5 million USD assistance for Afghanistan, addressing both humanitarian and basic needs. We hope this aid will positively impact the lives of vulnerable Afghans,” the embassy shared on X.

The WFP previously highlighted that nearly 15 million Afghans are uncertain about their next meal.

“WFP urgently requires $718 million to sustain its operations over the next six months,” the organization stated on X.

According to a recent WFP report, 11.6 million people—25% of the Afghan population—are currently in crisis.

The report also projected that 14.8 million Afghans will need food assistance between November 2024 and March 2025.

Furthermore, 3.5 million children under five years old and 1.15 million pregnant and breastfeeding women are expected to suffer from acute malnutrition in 2025. This reflects a 28% rise in moderately acute malnourished children and a 1% increase in severely acute cases compared to 2024.
