Beijing foreign minister says China and US can achieve ‘Great Things’

On Tuesday, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated that Beijing and Washington could achieve “many great things” through cooperation, ahead of President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration next month. However, Wang also cautioned against what he described as the US’s “crude interference” in Taiwan’s affairs.

The two largest global economies have been at odds over various issues, including trade, technology, human rights, and China’s increasing assertiveness regarding Taiwan, which it considers a part of its territory. Wang reiterated that China’s stance towards the United States remained unchanged, emphasizing the success of cooperation on economic initiatives and cross-border drug control as evidence of their potential for mutual benefit.

Nevertheless, Wang expressed strong opposition to US interference in Taiwan’s status, urging a firm defense of China’s legitimate rights and interests. He underscored that China would take a resolute response to any attempts to undermine its sovereignty.

Taiwan’s officials reported that China had conducted its largest maritime drills near the island in years, though Beijing did not officially confirm the exercises, asserting its right to conduct such operations at its discretion.

Looking ahead, Wang expressed hope that the Trump administration would make the right decisions to foster stable, healthy, and sustainable bilateral relations. However, he painted a bleak picture of the current global environment, marked by escalating geopolitical conflicts, supply chain disruptions, and ongoing turbulence.

Wang also highlighted China’s diplomatic efforts, including its mediation in Palestinian unity talks and its commitment to supporting Syria’s sovereignty amid ongoing conflict. Despite criticism of its ties with Russia, particularly regarding the war in Ukraine, Wang reaffirmed China’s “high level of strategic mutual trust” with Moscow.
