Gas supply to Quetta and its surrounding areas has been severely affected due to an extreme drop in temperatures, reaching as low as -6°C. This drastic cold weather caused a major disruption in the gas supply as an 18-inch diameter gas pipeline froze, leading to significant issues for localities including Nawan Killi and surrounding areas such as Pishin, Kuchlak, Bostan, and Ziarat.
A spokesperson for the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) confirmed that the freezing of the pipeline had interrupted the regular gas supply to these regions. In response to the situation, technical teams have been on-site since early morning, working tirelessly to thaw the frozen pipeline and restore gas services as soon as possible. Despite the challenging weather conditions, efforts are underway to resolve the issue and minimize the impact on the affected residents.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued weather predictions for the coming days. The department forecasted cold and dry conditions across most parts of the country over the next 24 hours. In particular, hilly areas are expected to experience very cold temperatures with partly cloudy to cloudy skies. The PMD also warned of shallow to moderate fog in certain areas during the morning hours, particularly in Northeast and South Punjab, as well as Upper Sindh.
The PMD’s synoptic report also mentioned that continental air is currently influencing much of the country, while a shallow westerly wave is passing through the northern regions. Over the past 24 hours, cold and dry conditions were observed in most regions, while hilly areas remained extremely cold with partly cloudy weather.
The combination of these weather conditions is not only affecting the gas supply but also posing challenges to daily life in various parts of the country. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and working to mitigate the effects of the severe cold on essential services.
