New Syrian leader Mohammad al-Bashir urges for ‘Stability and Calm’

Syria’s new transitional prime minister, Mohammad al-Bashir, has called for “stability and calm” following the toppling of President Bashar al-Assad by rebel forces in a rapid offensive. Appointed by the rebels, Bashir stated that it was time for the people of Syria to experience peace. Assad, who fled Syria, is now reportedly in Moscow, with the rebel leader Abu Mohammed al-Jolani pledging to rebuild Syria and avoid further conflict.

Around 350 Pakistani nationals, including stranded pilgrims, were safely repatriated from Syria to Lebanon, facilitated by Pakistan’s embassy. The U.S. has called for an inclusive political process in Syria, urging that the future government respect the rights of minorities and prevent terrorism. The U.N. also emphasized the need for the rebel forces to act on their pledges of unity and inclusiveness.

Meanwhile, the militant group ISIS remains active, killing 54 government soldiers, while the U.N. continues to urge accountability for human rights violations under Assad’s regime. The situation has prompted fears of sectarian violence and extremism resurgence.

In response to Israel’s military strikes in Syria, the U.N. has called for an end to the attacks, while Israel has warned Syria’s new leadership of consequences if Iran is allowed to re-establish itself in the country. Tensions also remain high in northern Syria with continued fighting between Turkish-backed forces and Kurdish groups.

The fall of Assad has ignited widespread celebrations but also a desperate search for missing detainees from Assad’s prisons, with many families hoping to find their loved ones among those released by the rebels.
