Biden urges accountability for ousted Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad

Biden calls for accountability for Assad, emphasizes Syria’s opportunity for rebuilding

US President Joe Biden has called for deposed Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad to be held accountable following Assad’s reported ouster by rebel factions. Speaking from the White House, Biden described the regime’s fall as a “fundamental act of justice” and highlighted a “historic opportunity” for Syrians to rebuild their nation.

Biden confirmed that US forces had conducted strikes on Islamic State (IS) targets to prevent the group from exploiting the political transition. He also emphasized the importance of scrutinizing hardline rebel groups involved in Assad’s overthrow, citing concerns about their history of terrorism and human rights abuses.

The US plans to support Syria’s transition through collaboration with the United Nations to establish a new government and constitution. Biden also reiterated vigilance over Syria’s chemical weapons stockpile and pledged continued efforts to prevent IS resurgence.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed optimism, stating that Syrians “finally have reason for hope” after 14 years of conflict, while urging accountability for atrocities committed by the Assad regime. Biden also confirmed that abducted American journalist Austin Tice is believed to be alive, although his location remains unknown.
