LHC criticizes market timing relaxation issues orders to address smog

The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday voiced its dissatisfaction with the extension of market hours to 10 PM amid ongoing anti-smog efforts.

During a hearing on a petition regarding measures to combat smog, Justice Shahid Karim questioned the advocate general about changing market hours without submitting a report to the court.

“How can market timings be altered without court approval?” Justice Karim asked, adding that the decision seemed to be influenced by outside pressure. “This is a critical matter, and negligence cannot be tolerated,” he remarked.

The advocate general assured the court that the issue would be addressed promptly.

The court directed officials to issue vehicle fitness tags only after ensuring certification and stressed the role of the Safe Cities Authority in streamlining the process.

Additionally, Justice Karim ordered inspections of motorcycles and mini-loaders to help reduce smog levels.
