South Korea’s ruling party rejects impeachment effort against president Yoon

South Korea’s ruling party announced on Wednesday its decision to oppose the opposition’s move to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol over his controversial martial law declaration, according to local media reports.

The People Power Party (PPP) reached this decision during a meeting of its lawmakers, who unanimously backed the party’s stance against impeachment, Yonhap News reported.

Earlier on Wednesday, President Yoon held discussions with Prime Minister Han Duck-soo and senior PPP leaders to strategize after opposition parties filed an impeachment motion in response to Yoon’s brief martial law declaration late Tuesday night.

For the motion to pass, it requires a two-thirds majority in the National Assembly, which would necessitate at least eight ruling party lawmakers siding with the opposition in the 300-member parliament.

In a televised address late Tuesday, Yoon declared martial law, only to revoke it hours later following unanimous parliamentary opposition and widespread public protests.
