Karachi introduces free Wi-Fi at historic frere hall

In a bid to enhance public convenience, Karachi’s city government has introduced free Wi-Fi services at the historic Frere Hall. The initiative was inaugurated by Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab during his visit to the iconic landmark, which dates back to the British colonial era.

Built in 1865 as Karachi’s town hall, Frere Hall now serves as a cultural and social hub. Mayor Wahab emphasized the significance of modernizing public spaces with amenities like free internet to enhance the citizen experience. He also announced plans to expand the free Wi-Fi service to other historic and recreational sites, including parks managed by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC).

This development mirrors a similar initiative in Punjab, where Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif expanded Lahore’s free Wi-Fi network from 100 to 200 locations in June 2024. As part of the ‘Digital Punjab’ vision, free emergency Wi-Fi services were launched in areas like Manga Mandi, Multan Road, and Bund Road. These services aim to support emergency communication through platforms like the Women Safety App and Punjab Police App, though access to entertainment sites such as Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok remains restricted.

With this initiative, Karachi aligns itself with the growing trend of equipping public spaces with free internet, paving the way for greater digital accessibility across Pakistan.
