The Punjab government has enforced a three-day ban on the entry of heavy vehicles into Lahore, effective today, tomorrow, and Sunday, to address the worsening smog issue in the city.
During this period, no heavy vehicles, including loader tractors and trolleys, will be permitted to enter Lahore. Law enforcement personnel will be stationed at 12 major entry and exit points under the supervision of Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) to ensure compliance.
Vehicles that emit excessive black smoke or lack a fitness certificate will also be prohibited from entering. However, essential services such as fuel, medical supplies, food items, and passenger vehicles will be allowed entry after proper inspection.
Amara Athar, a spokesperson for the government, emphasized the importance of adhering to the ban for public health and environmental protection. “We all need to unite in tackling environmental pollution,” she stated.
In addition to the vehicle entry ban, Lahore’s Traffic Police are intensifying efforts against vehicles emitting excessive smoke, imposing millions of rupees in fines daily. Hundreds of vehicles have been impounded as part of this initiative.
Moreover, the city has deployed 41 anti-smog squads to inspect and penalize violators. This year, over 62,000 heavy vehicles, 13,000 tractor trolleys, and 16,000 cars and motorcycles have been fined for smog-related violations.
Authorities remain determined to improve Lahore’s air quality and reduce pollution.
