The impact of CPEC’s Sahiwal power plant on smog

As Punjab struggles to address its smog crisis, the Sahiwal coal-fired power plant, established under CPEC, stands out for maintaining minimal emission levels through the use of advanced technologies like Electrostatic Precipitators (ESP) and Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) systems.

These state-of-the-art systems efficiently capture and eliminate particulate matter and sulfur dioxide from exhaust gases, ensuring emissions remain well below the standards set by Pakistan’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the World Bank, and Chinese regulations.

Highlighting the plant’s eco-conscious measures, Media Coordinator Umair Shahid explained during a research survey conducted by the Institute of International Relations and Media Research (IIRMR) with environmentalists and university researchers, that the plant has taken significant steps to further minimize emissions within its operations. “One notable initiative is the adoption of electric vehicles for internal transportation. The use of electric carts for moving personnel and goods within the premises has been strictly enforced, replacing fuel-powered vehicles that contribute to air pollution,” he stated.

This shift to electric carts significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions, particulate matter, and other air pollutants, enhancing air quality both within and around the facility. Shahid emphasized that this initiative not only addresses local pollution but also reflects the plant’s broader commitment to sustainability and lowering its carbon footprint.

The survey also revealed the plant’s ambitious plantation drive aimed at increasing greenery in and around its premises. This ongoing initiative forms a key part of the plant’s anti-smog strategy, leveraging the role of trees and vegetation in improving air quality. Employees actively participate in regular tree-planting activities, fostering a more environmentally friendly workplace.

By expanding its green cover, the Sahiwal Power Plant is making a positive contribution to the local ecosystem and setting an example for other industrial entities to adopt sustainable practices, the IIRMR survey noted.
