UNRWA issues warning over escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza due to winter storms

The UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) has issued a warning about the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza as winter conditions intensify. According to UNRWA media officer Inas Hamdan, displaced residents are facing severe challenges due to heavy rains, strong winds, and rising sea levels.

Hamdan described the situation as catastrophic, with damaged tents leaving many families without proper shelter and an urgent shortage of essential winter supplies. Basic items such as flour and food are nearly exhausted, while there is a significant lack of materials for constructing makeshift shelters.

Despite UNRWA’s efforts to distribute around 13,000 winter essentials in Gaza, the supplies are insufficient to meet the growing needs of displaced families. In addition to shelter, there is a critical shortage of medical supplies, exacerbating the overcrowding and poor living conditions in the region.

With nearly 1.8 million displaced people facing increased risks of disease outbreaks, Hamdan called for increased international support and greater pressure on authorities to allow more humanitarian aid into Gaza. The current aid flow, limited to about 30 trucks daily, is far below what is needed to address the overwhelming demands.

The crisis is further compounded by the ongoing Israeli military operations and devastating winter storms, with thousands of tents destroyed by the harsh weather. Gaza’s displaced population, which is estimated at around two million people, continues to suffer as the international community presses for more substantial action to alleviate their hardship.
