KP Government abolishes quota-based job appointments

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has officially eliminated quota-based job appointments in the province, following a directive from the Supreme Court. A notification issued by the Chief Secretary of KP instructed all government departments to ensure that future recruitments are conducted solely on an open merit basis.

This move follows the Supreme Court’s ruling, which declared quota-based appointments unconstitutional. The KP government clarified that any appointments made without merit would be deemed a violation of the Constitution.

However, the order specifies that compensation packages for the families of law enforcement officers and civil servants who were killed in terrorist attacks will remain unchanged.

In a related development, the Punjab government recently amended the Punjab Civil Servants Act, 1974, by removing Rule 17-A, which previously allowed family members of deceased government employees to be appointed to jobs. A notification confirmed that this amendment will take effect immediately.
