Women lawyers file a challenge to 26th amendment in Supreme Court

28 Women Lawyers Challenge 26th Amendment in Supreme Court

A group of 28 women lawyers from various district and high courts filed a petition in the Supreme Court on Monday, seeking a declaration that the 26th amendment is “procedurally defective.” They claimed that votes in favor of the constitutional amendment were allegedly cast under duress, coercion, or unlawful inducement.

The petition, drafted by Advocate Zainab Janjua, urged the court to invalidate the 26th amendment on the grounds that the required two-thirds majority was not lawfully secured.

Notable petitioners include Imaan Mazari-Hazir, Rida Hosain, Maryam Khan, Syeda Khushbakht Shah, and Angbeen Atif Mirza.

The petition highlighted that the petitioners, all licensed to practice law, represent district and high courts across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, and Islamabad.
