PTI Resolute Ahead of Islamabad Protest, Demands Imran Khan’s Release and Constitutional Restoration
Days before its planned power show in Islamabad, the PTI announced on Monday that it would not end its sit-in until its “stolen” mandate was returned, the Constitution restored, and party chairman Imran Khan freed from detention.
At a press conference, Opposition Leader in the Punjab Assembly Malik Ahmad Khan Bhachar urged the provincial government to allow PTI workers to march peacefully on the federal capital, warning against excessive force.
Separately, PTI Central Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram, in a statement, declared November 24 a ‘day of deliverance,’ with massive public turnout expected to “sweep away the imposed rulers.” He emphasized that protesters would remain in Islamabad until their demands were met, including the release of Imran Khan, the restoration of the Constitution to its pre-26th amendment status, and reclaiming the party’s mandate.
Akram also criticized a British court’s ruling declaring Hasan Nawaz bankrupt in a tax case, claiming it highlighted the Sharif family’s tarnished reputation. He alleged that while the family manipulates Pakistan’s judicial system, they cannot escape accountability abroad.
He cautioned the government against using oppressive measures to hinder the march, stressing that peaceful protest is a constitutional right. He accused Punjab authorities of detaining PTI leaders and workers, predicting such actions would provoke further public resentment.
Bhachar’s Warnings
Addressing the media, Bhachar stated that PTI had no intention of instigating clashes, but warned that any police brutality might provoke public retaliation. He accused Punjab police of raiding the homes of PTI leaders, harassing families, and damaging property, urging participants to be prepared for a prolonged protest.
He assured that PTI’s demonstrations would be weapon-free and promised a “big surprise” on November 24. Bhachar refused to divulge further details, citing policy decisions.
He also criticized Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and Environment Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb for leaving the smog-stricken Punjab while traveling abroad, demanding accountability for Rs10 billion allocated for smog mitigation. Bhachar condemned the imposition of fixed agricultural taxes on small farmers and suggested instead taxing large landlords with substantial income from industrial ventures.
Calls for Judicial Probe and Smog Mitigation
Bhachar reiterated PTI’s demand for a judicial commission to investigate the May 9 incidents, stating that public sentiment had rejected the government’s narrative on February 8. Responding to a question about PTI Punjab President Chaudhry Parvez Elahi, he said the party continues to take instructions from him.
