The Lahore High Court (LHC) has instructed the Punjab government to shift motorcycles from petrol to battery power as part of efforts to combat smog.
During hearings on smog prevention, Justice Shahid Karim also directed the strict monitoring of motorcycles in Lahore. The court further ordered the provincial government to develop a policy for small and medium public transport within the city.
In its written ruling, the LHC emphasized the environmental advantages of converting to electric buses, noting their potential to reduce pollution. The Advocate General informed the court that funds for purchasing these buses have already been allocated.
The court also mentioned that the Punjab government has identified sites for tree planting without needing additional land. Plans are also in progress to relocate industrial units from major roads, such as GT Road, Multan Road, and Ferozepur Road, to designated industrial zones.
The LHC highlighted that effective implementation of the smog policy could lead to significant improvements. The next hearing is scheduled for November 20.
