Can the India-Pakistan dispute over the 2025 champions trophy be resolved?

A new proposal is being discussed to resolve the ongoing India-Pakistan standoff over the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, with a potential “give and take” solution on the table. Sources indicate that both the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) may need to make compromises to ensure the tournament proceeds.

Under the proposal, India would play one of their group-stage matches in Pakistan, specifically at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium. If India advances to the semi-finals, their remaining matches would be held in the UAE. However, if India reaches the final, they would play it in Lahore. In exchange, Pakistan would receive a larger share of the tournament revenue to compensate for the financial impact of India’s reluctance to play in Pakistan.

The BCCI, which has consistently opposed playing in Pakistan, might have to agree to this hybrid model, marking a significant shift in their position. For the PCB, this agreement would assert their influence in the region and ensure the Champions Trophy proceeds as planned.

Broadcasters are increasingly frustrated with the uncertainty over the venue for India’s matches and are pressuring the ICC to finalize the schedule. If no solution is reached soon, broadcasters may consider legal action.

The tournament is scheduled to take place from February 19 to March 9, 2025, with matches in Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi. The final will be held in Lahore on March 9, with the semi-finals on March 5 and 6.
