Government seizes 1.09 billion rupees in power theft operation

In an ongoing effort to combat electricity theft, government agencies overseeing energy and law enforcement have reported a significant achievement this past week. More than 1.09 billion rupees were recovered from individuals and organizations involved in power theft, with 141 suspects arrested across the country.

This crackdown is part of a larger initiative aimed at addressing the substantial financial and operational losses faced by the power sector due to illegal electricity usage. Authorities disclosed that efforts to detect and halt unauthorized connections have been ramped up, with surprise inspections conducted in both urban and rural areas.

A government spokesperson emphasized, “We are fully committed to eradicating power theft, which places a heavy strain on legitimate consumers and the national grid. The operations carried out this past week demonstrate our resolve to hold perpetrators accountable and safeguard the interests of both the public and the industry.”

In addition to legal measures, officials are reportedly exploring the use of advanced technologies and surveillance systems to prevent future thefts and enhance monitoring of the distribution network. According to government estimates, electricity theft and related losses cost the economy billions each year, undermining revenue and compromising energy supply stability.

While the recent arrests and recovery represent a significant milestone, authorities have signaled that additional actions are planned in the coming weeks as part of the ongoing nationwide crackdown.
