Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif has expressed hope that US-Pakistan relations will remain stable and improve following Donald Trump’s victory in the US elections.
Speaking to the media in London after returning from Geneva with his daughter Maryam Nawaz, Nawaz Sharif emphasized the importance of maintaining positive relations with the US and neighboring countries. “Relations between the US and Pakistan have been good, should remain good, and can improve further,” he said, adding that good relations with neighboring India were also essential. He noted that India’s cricket team should have visited Pakistan to enhance ties and suggested that improved relations with India were possible, with no barriers in sight.
On the issue of smog pollution in Punjab, Nawaz criticized the PTI government’s claims, asking where the “billion-tree tsunami” and promises of 50 lakh jobs and new dams were. He remarked that the PTI government had failed to deliver on its projects, questioning their achievements during their time in power. Nawaz also condemned the PTI’s promotion of a culture of misbehavior and hooliganism, accusing them of encouraging such behavior both in power and opposition.
When asked about the situation with Imran Khan, Nawaz said, “Ask those who believe that he will stay in jail for as long as he wants.”
Nawaz also praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for his efforts to stabilize Pakistan’s economy, noting that economic indicators were improving, reserves were rising, and inflation was decreasing. He commended Maryam Nawaz for reducing flour prices and providing Rs55 billion in electricity relief.
Maryam Nawaz, Punjab Chief Minister, stated that the country was receiving positive news after the PML-N government’s return. While acknowledging the persistent issue of smog in Punjab, she assured that steps were being taken to address it. “We are doing our utmost to resolve it,” she added, highlighting that no steps had been taken in the past to address the problem. She also mentioned ongoing plans for a Punjab Airline.
Regarding her health, Maryam clarified that she was in good condition after a recent medical check-up in Geneva, where she was accompanied by Senior Punjab Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb. They had stayed for four days, and the Sharifs were scheduled to return to Pakistan over the weekend.
