To tackle the worsening smog in Lahore, the district administration has imposed a temporary ban on outdoor activities from November 11 to 17.
A notification from the Deputy Commissioner states that all sports events, exhibitions, and outdoor dining are suspended, with the exception of religious gatherings. Additionally, business hours are limited, requiring shops, markets, and malls to close by 8 PM, though medical stores, labs, petrol stations, and grocery stores are exempt. Large retail stores can only operate their grocery and medical sections.
Strict penalties under Section 188 will be enforced for violations, and residents are urged to limit outdoor exposure and wear masks to mitigate health risks from the smog.
Meanwhile, the Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) has intensified tree-washing efforts along major roads and green spaces, such as Mall Road, Jail Road, Ferozepur Road, and in Gulberg and Model Town, as part of anti-pollution measures. PHA Director General Muhammad Tahir Wattoo emphasized the importance of tree plantation and maintenance to combat smog. A recent Green Master Plan report has highlighted six key factors contributing to Lahore’s air pollution, stressing the need for urgent action.
