The 29th UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) will commence in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Monday, with a focus on tackling the growing climate crisis. The conference, running until November 22, will gather leaders from governments, businesses, and civil society to discuss urgent solutions.
With global temperatures reaching record levels and extreme weather events impacting people worldwide, COP29 aims to drive concrete actions. A central topic will be climate finance, as trillions of dollars are needed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect communities from the escalating impacts of climate change.
The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), established in 1992, forms the basis for global climate discussions and agreements, including the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement. Since its enactment in 1994, the UNFCCC has guided international efforts to address the climate emergency. Currently, 198 countries participate in annual meetings to assess progress and formulate responses to the crisis.
