Lahore Faces Dangerous Air Quality as AQI Soars

Lahore, the capital city of Punjab, and other districts in the region are facing a severe air quality crisis, with smog levels surpassing hazardous thresholds and impacting daily life. The air quality in Lahore has deteriorated to alarming levels, leaving residents vulnerable to a range of respiratory problems and other health concerns.

On Thursday morning, Lahore was at the top of the global Air Quality Index (AQI) rankings, with pollution levels exceeding 800, signaling a dangerously unhealthy atmosphere. By 9 a.m., the AQI remained at a hazardous level of 784, according to data from Swiss air quality monitor IQAir. For weeks, Lahore and its neighboring areas have experienced AQI levels exceeding 1,000, primarily due to winds carrying pollution from nearby India. Senior Punjab Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb highlighted this ongoing issue on Wednesday, stressing its impact on public health.

The prolonged exposure to such toxic air has led to a surge in hospital admissions, particularly for respiratory issues. Cities such as Multan, Kasur, Sheikhupura, and Gujranwala are also grappling with the harmful effects of the smog. For many residents, stepping outside has become a health risk, with doctors advising the use of masks to minimize exposure.

In response to the hazardous air quality, both public and private educational institutions across Lahore and other districts in Punjab have been closed until November 17. The government has also mandated a shift to online classes for all educational levels. This decision, which was confirmed by Minister Aurangzeb in a press conference, aims to reduce the public’s exposure to the harmful pollutants.

Alongside school closures, the Punjab government has enforced several measures to combat the air crisis. A mandatory mask policy has been introduced for public spaces, while government and private offices have been instructed to implement a 50% work-from-home policy. All government meetings will be conducted online until further instructions.

The government has also established a Smog War Room, which monitors air quality data and coordinates efforts across various departments, including health, agriculture, and environment, to address the ongoing pollution problem.

These measures come as a response to the dire air quality, which has made it increasingly difficult for residents to carry on with their daily routines while prioritizing public health.
