The testimony of Donald Lu is characterized as routine by the US

The upcoming Congressional committee hearing featuring Assistant Secretary Donald Lu has been described by the US State Department as routine, with spokesperson Matthew Miller emphasizing that it’s a common occurrence for State Department officials to testify before Congress on various matters.

Scheduled for March 20, the hearing by the House Subcommittee on the Middle East, Africa, and Central Asia, titled “Pakistan After the Elections: Examining the Future of Democracy in Pakistan and the US-Pakistan Relationship,” will explore the implications of Pakistan’s recent general elections on the future of democracy in the country and its relationship with the United States.

Although the hearing may not significantly impact the trajectory of US-Pakistan relations, which have seen improvements in recent years despite ongoing challenges, it remains an essential part of Congressional oversight and policymaking.

Addressing concerns about Lu’s safety during the hearing, Miller reiterated the State Department’s commitment to the safety and security of its diplomats, condemning any threats made against them.

Regarding allegations against Lu regarding the toppling of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, Miller reiterated that the allegations are baseless and have been refuted multiple times.

Pakistan has expressed its welcome to the hearing, emphasizing its commitment to constructive engagement with the United States and respecting the prerogative of legislative bodies to discuss international issues.

The hearing follows a letter endorsed by 31 Congress members urging President Biden and Secretary of State Blinken to withhold recognition of the new Pakistani government and investigate alleged election manipulation.

Pakistan’s general elections last month were marred by widespread allegations of fraud, delayed results, and irregularities, with the PTI winning the most seats despite challenges, including the denial of their electoral symbol and the imprisonment of their leader, former Prime Minister Imran Khan, prior to the elections.
