Gilgit-Baltistan marks 78th liberation day

Today, Gilgit-Baltistan is celebrating its 78th Liberation Day with flag-hoisting ceremonies held in various districts, including Gilgit and Skardu.

The main event is set to take place at Chinar Bagh in Gilgit, where a special ceremony organized by the Pakistan Army will honor the martyrs and heroes who fought for the region’s freedom.

To commemorate this historic occasion, the government of Gilgit-Baltistan has declared a public holiday. The region gained independence from Dogra rule on November 1, 1947, and subsequently joined Pakistan. This day marks the first time the Pakistani flag was raised in Gilgit, symbolizing the end of Dogra dominance. A year later, in 1948, Baltistan also gained its freedom from Indian rule.

Known for its stunning landscapes, rich culture, and economic potential, Gilgit-Baltistan is an attractive destination for tourism and new economic opportunities.
