Goat farming is emerging as a profitable and sustainable income source for rural communities, particularly those with limited resources. Dr. Ashfaq, an agricultural economics and rural development expert, told WealthPK that goat farming is a practical option for Pakistan’s rural communities due to its low initial costs and beneficial returns. Even families with minimal investments can start small, with as few as two to four goats, ensuring a steady income stream.
The natural landscape, diverse vegetation, and ample grazing land in rural Pakistan make goat farming ideal, with goats requiring less specialized care than other livestock and thriving on a wide range of vegetation, including shrubs and agricultural waste. This adaptability, combined with an already present knowledge of goat rearing among rural families, makes the venture accessible and manageable.
Dr. Ashfaq highlighted that goats are fast-growing and prolific breeders, often giving birth to twins or triplets, allowing quick herd expansion. Additionally, rising demand for goat products like meat, milk, and hides in both rural and urban markets promises a stable income for farmers.
Dr. Zahid, an expert in animal breeding and genetics, emphasized breed selection as key to success. He recommended the Beetal breed for its dual milk and meat production, Kamori for its resilience to local climates and diseases, and Teddy goats for rapid growth in meat production. He advised farmers to start with young, healthy females and a proven male breeder, ensuring the best start for their operations.
