PTI Senator Sania Nishtar has officially stepped down from her Senate seat, as confirmed by various sources. Nishtar, who formerly held the role of special assistant to the prime minister during the PTI-led administration, submitted her resignation to the Senate Secretariat after being appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, an esteemed international organization headquartered in Geneva.
Elected to the Senate in 2021 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Nishtar is a trained physician and a well-known advocate for poverty alleviation. During her tenure, she served as the Special Assistant on Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety, with ministerial status. In this capacity, she was responsible for overseeing significant initiatives like the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) and the Ehsaas Programme, both aimed at providing financial assistance and social safety nets for vulnerable populations.
Additionally, Nishtar has an extensive background in public service, having been part of Pakistan’s interim federal cabinet in 2013, where she played a vital role in managing key areas such as public health, education, and science initiatives. Her experience and expertise in these sectors have made her a prominent figure in the fight against poverty and in promoting health initiatives in the country.
Sania Nishtar’s resignation from the Senate marks a significant transition in her career, as she takes on this new international role with Gavi. Her appointment is expected to enhance her ability to influence global health policies, particularly in areas related to vaccination and public health, leveraging her extensive experience and dedication to social welfare.
