On Tuesday, Russia announced that it had taken control of three additional settlements in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region as part of its ongoing offensive in the area.
According to a statement from the Defense Ministry, Russian forces captured the villages of Katerynivka and Bohoiavlenka, located approximately 13 and 15 kilometers (8 and 9.3 miles) south of Kurakhove, a city that hosts a thermal power station.
Kurakhove itself lies about 34 kilometers (21.1 miles) south of Pokrovsk, a major focal point in Moscow’s campaign in eastern Ukraine. The statement also indicated that Russian troops gained control of the city of Hirnyk, situated roughly 29 kilometers (18 miles) southeast of Pokrovsk.
In recent months, Russia has frequently reported territorial gains as its offensive continues in Donetsk, particularly around Pokrovsk, which is a critical logistics hub for the Ukrainian military in the region bordering Russia.
In response, Ukraine’s General Staff stated that its forces are actively holding back Russian troops near Katerynivka and have successfully repelled 12 attempts to breach defenses around two settlements close to Vremivka, including Bohoiavlenka. Ukrainian authorities have yet to comment on Russia’s claims, and independent verification of the situation remains challenging due to the ongoing conflict.
