Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) organized a protest outside the Karachi Press Club to demand the release of Imran Khan and to oppose the 26th constitutional amendment. The demonstration featured prominent figures, including former President Arif Alvi, Khurram Sher Zaman, Raja Azhar, Jamal Siddiqui, Sindh Women’s Wing President Sarina Khan, General Secretary Kanwal Ijaz, Senior Vice President Irum Butt, Vice President Shazia Imran, Secretary Information Sofia Khan, Deputy Secretary Information Irum Riaz, and several other women.
Speakers emphasized that the protest aimed to combat fascism, highlighting the unjust imprisonment of their chairman, Imran Khan, and the ban on meeting him, which they said is alarming both the public and party leaders. They pledged to continue their struggle for Khan’s release. The protest was noted for its peaceful nature, with the women of Karachi playing a significant role. Various PTI leaders, youth, lawyers, and women’s wing members actively participated in the event.
At the protest’s onset, former National Assembly member Alamgir Khan was detained by police.
Additionally, a lawyer affiliated with PTI has filed a petition against the 26th constitutional amendment. Advocate Ashraf Sammon stated that the amendment undermines the independence of the judiciary, a crucial pillar of the state. He argues that the amendment specifically targets the judiciary and seeks to safeguard the independence and supremacy of the judicial system. The constitutional petition is based on the 1973 Constitution of Pakistan, and Sammon has requested the formation of a full bench to hear the case in order to protect the fundamental rights of every Pakistani.
