Lawyers and human rights organizations are raising concerns that the 26th Constitutional Amendment could place the judiciary under government control, calling for its withdrawal.
During a press conference in Karachi, senior lawyers announced plans for a protest movement against the amendment, with a detailed program to be revealed soon.
Munir A. Malik, the former president of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), described the current governance system as a “controlled democracy” and voiced worries that the judiciary would suffer the same fate. “This amendment marks a significant step towards a judiciary that is controlled by the establishment,” Mr. Malik stated at the Karachi Press Club.
