Selectors in Rawalpindi to monitor pitch preparation for third test against England

Members of the national selection committee, including Aaqib Javed, Aleem Dar, Asad Shafiq, and Azhar Ali, are currently in Rawalpindi overseeing the preparation of the pitch for Pakistan’s third and final Test against England. This initiative is reported by the Press Trust of India (PTI) and aims to create a spin-friendly surface at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

To achieve this, large industrial fans have been strategically placed at both ends of the pitch to help dry out any excess moisture. This tactic follows Pakistan’s recent success, highlighted by their victory over England by 152 runs in the second Test match in Multan last week. In that match, spinners Sajid Khan and Noman Ali played pivotal roles, capturing all 20 English wickets.

A source familiar with the selectors’ plans revealed, “The ground staff has been directed to create a pitch that significantly benefits spinners, as Pakistan intends to mount another spin attack against England.” Currently, the series stands at one match apiece, with England winning the opening Test by an innings and 47 runs before Pakistan made a strong comeback.

In preparation, the ground staff is employing various techniques to maintain a dry pitch. They are utilizing large fans, heaters, and black cloth to absorb moisture from the surface. This method aims to facilitate the formation of cracks under the sun, enhancing spin options during the match.

While the England team has not yet inspected the pitch, choosing to rest after their arrival in Islamabad, the Pakistan players have been busy with their nets session. Aaqib Javed and Aleem Dar, known for their expertise with home pitches, are determined to leverage the home advantage effectively. Although captain Shan Masood and head coach Jason Gillespie are kept informed about the pitch preparation, the selectors remain more directly involved. Pakistan is keen to secure a series victory at Rawalpindi, which holds memories of their last series win against South Africa in January 2021.
