Israel plans major offensive against Iran following missile strike: Official

Israel is reportedly preparing a “major attack” against Iran in response to the October 1 ballistic missile strike on Tel Aviv, according to an Israeli official. The attack, which saw Iran fire approximately 180 ballistic missiles at Israel, was claimed by Tehran as retaliation for the recent assassinations of leaders from Hezbollah, Hamas, and a Revolutionary Guard commander.

An unnamed official, speaking to the public broadcaster KAN, stated that Israel’s preparations include strengthening its defenses in anticipation of potential Iranian retaliation. While no specific targets were mentioned, there is speculation that oil or nuclear facilities in Iran could be in Israel’s sights.

Following the Iranian strike, Israel has been in close talks with the U.S. regarding possible targets and defensive strategies. The U.S. recently deployed a THAAD air defense system to Israel, enhancing the country’s missile defense capabilities, which previously relied on the Arrow, David’s Sling, and Iron Dome systems. These existing defenses had struggled to effectively counter the barrage of Iranian missiles.

Tehran has warned it will retaliate “painfully” if Israel proceeds with its attack, raising concerns about a potential regional conflict. Tensions between Israel and Iran have simmered for years, with both countries accusing each other of cyberattacks and other hostile actions.

This latest development comes as Israel continues its military offensive in Gaza, launched in response to a Hamas attack last year. The ongoing assault has drawn widespread international condemnation, with more than 42,600 people, primarily women and children, killed and almost the entire population of Gaza displaced due to a severe blockade. Israel is now confronted with a genocide case at the International Court of Justice due to its actions in Gaza.
