Lahore Qalandars’ Aaqib Javed departs to become a selector for the Pakistan cricket team.

Former Test cricketer Aaqib Javed has concluded an impressive eight-year journey with the Lahore Qalandars, having recently been appointed as a selector for the Pakistan national cricket team. At the age of 52, Javed held significant roles within the franchise, including Director of Cricket Operations and Head Coach, where he was instrumental in evolving the Qalandars into one of the top teams in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). Under his leadership, the team made it to three PSL finals between 2020 and 2023, ultimately securing back-to-back titles, a remarkable achievement that solidified their position in the league.

Joining the Qalandars in June 2016, Javed focused on enhancing the team’s Player Development Program (PDP). This initiative was pivotal in identifying and nurturing emerging cricket talent, allowing young players to thrive and gain valuable experience. Reflecting on his time with the franchise, Javed expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to the Qalandars’ vision. He stated, “My time with Lahore Qalandars has been filled with countless memorable experiences. Watching young talent flourish through the PDP has been incredibly rewarding. While it’s tough to leave, I’m eager to bring my experience to Pakistan cricket.”

Sameen Rana, co-owner of the Lahore Qalandars, praised Javed’s unwavering commitment, stating, “Aaqib’s steadfast dedication has been crucial in defining the franchise’s identity. His work with the PDP and the PSL titles form a proud part of his legacy. Although we part ways, we are excited about his new role with the national team and confident that he will continue to make a positive impact.”

As Javed embarks on this new chapter as a selector for the Pakistan team, he aims to leverage his expertise and dedication to foster the next generation of cricketers, contributing significantly to the future success of Pakistan cricket.
