The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced a significant expansion of Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, increasing its spectator capacity from 21,000 to 34,000 in preparation for the 2025 Champions Trophy.
Jawaid Qazi Ahmed, the PCB’s Director of Infrastructure, stated that construction is currently in full swing to achieve this goal. The project is expected to cost around Rs7.5 billion and aims for completion by December 31, 2024. As part of the renovation, trees are being removed to improve sightlines, and enclosures will be brought closer to the pitch for a better viewing experience.
With an ICC delegation scheduled to visit Pakistan in late October or early November, the PCB is working hard to ensure Gaddafi Stadium is ready to host international matches. The Champions Trophy, taking place from February 19 to March 9, will be a major test for the newly expanded stadium.
In Group A of the tournament, Pakistan will compete against India, Bangladesh, and New Zealand. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is currently awaiting government approval to confirm its participation in matches held in Pakistan.
The tournament will feature matches in Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi, with Lahore hosting seven matches, including the final. Karachi will host the opening match and one semi-final, while Rawalpindi will stage five matches, including the other. The semi-finals are scheduled for March 5 and 6, with the final set to take place on March 9.
Renovations at Gaddafi Stadium began last month, with demolition work on the enclosures already in progress. A major milestone is to complete the basement work of the main building by September 30. The renovation of Gaddafi Stadium is included in a broader Rs12.8 billion investment plan focused on upgrading three major cricket venues across Pakistan.
Following the initial phase, construction will progress with one floor completed each month, and the entire structure—including new pavilions—set to be finished by the end of December. The renovation plan includes installing steel-structured enclosures positioned closer to the field to enhance the spectator experience.
Additionally, the stadium’s drainage system will be modernized, digital screens will be introduced, and outdated floodlights will be replaced with advanced LED lighting. This extensive renovation at Gaddafi Stadium is a crucial part of Pakistan’s efforts to provide world-class facilities for the Champions Trophy, aiming to elevate the venue’s status and improve the experience for players and fans alike.
Alongside Gaddafi Stadium, renovations are also taking place at the National Bank Stadium and Pindi Stadium, with budgets of Rs3.5 billion and Rs1.5 billion, respectively.
