Pakistan and China forge ahead with CPEC and economic Collaboration

In a significant move to bolster bilateral relations, Pakistan and China reiterated their commitment to enhance strategic cooperation in essential areas like the economy, investment, and regional connectivity during a meeting on Tuesday.

Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang’s arrival in Pakistan for a four-day bilateral visit marks a historic moment, being the first visit by a Chinese premier in 11 years, following his predecessor Li Keqiang’s trip in May 2013. His visit comes in the wake of a tragic explosion near Jinnah International Airport on October 6, which claimed three lives and injured several others, including a Chinese national. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif assured the Chinese delegation that he would take personal charge of the investigation into this unfortunate incident.

During the meeting, PM Shehbaz virtually inaugurated the Gwadar International Airport, which he referred to as a “gift” from China. In a subsequent meeting with President Asif Ali Zardari, both leaders stressed the importance of fast-tracking the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects, vital for enhancing infrastructure and economic growth.

President Zardari warmly welcomed the Chinese delegation, emphasizing that Pakistan’s friendship with China is a cornerstone of its foreign policy. He highlighted the need to explore new avenues for cooperation and improve connectivity through robust transportation networks, fostering trade and strengthening people-to-people links.

Encouraging Chinese investment in Pakistan’s stock market, Zardari noted that this is an opportune moment to leverage China’s economic growth, particularly through the CPEC and Gwadar Port initiatives. He also expressed his intent to visit China in November to reconnect with old friends and further discuss strengthening ties.

Reflecting on previous engagements with China, Zardari expressed heartfelt condolences for the recent loss of Chinese nationals in the terrorist attack, underlining the need to ensure their safety. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to combating threats to their friendship and the integrity of CPEC projects.

Premier Li Qiang echoed Zardari’s sentiments, describing Pakistan and China as true partners. He expressed optimism about the future of their strategic cooperation, confident that both nations would continue to support each other amid global challenges.

As a gesture of goodwill, President Zardari later hosted a state luncheon in honor of Premier Li and his delegation, marking a positive step in enhancing diplomatic relations between the two countries.
