The Sindh Human Rights Commission has submitted a comprehensive report to the government concerning the murder of Dr. Shahnawaz was murdered following accusations of blasphemy. The report reveals significant inconsistencies in the actions of law enforcement and calls for a deeper investigation into the matter.
According to the report, senior police officials, including the SSPs and DIGs of Mirpur Khas and Umerkot, initially denied having arrested Dr. Shahnawaz. However, three officers later acknowledged that they had detained him in Karachi. The report also criticized the authorities for failing to seek technical assistance from the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) after the case was registered.
Additionally, the report pointed out that the postpartum examination of Dr. Shahnawaz was delayed for two days because the medical officer in charge was on leave. This delay in obtaining critical medical evidence raised serious concerns about how the case was handled.
The Human Rights Commission has recommended the establishment of a joint investigation team (JIT) to identify those truly responsible for this tragic incident.Dr. Shahnawaz, a resident of Umerkot, was reportedly killed in what Sindhri Police described as a police encounter. However, his body was later taken by a mob and burned while being transported for burial due to allegations of blasphemy.
In response to this incident, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah acted quickly, dismissing the DIG and SSP of Mirpur Khas.
