UN: 250,000 people flee Lebanon to Syria due to Israeli attacks

Approximately 250,000 people have fled from Lebanon into Syria in response to Israel’s intensified attacks, according to Filippo Grandi, the head of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), who spoke on Monday.

“I’m currently at the Syrian-Lebanese border, where a quarter of a million individuals have crossed since September 23,” Grandi stated on X.

He noted that local authorities, the Syrian Red Crescent, the UN, and various partners are working tirelessly to provide a compassionate and effective response to this influx.

Grandi visited the area on Saturday to meet with officials, as well as Syrian and Lebanese nationals who had escaped Lebanon due to Israeli strikes.

He emphasized that countless people have been left destitute or displaced as a result of Israeli airstrikes.

Since September 23, Israel has conducted extensive airstrikes throughout Lebanon, targeting what it claims are Hezbollah positions, resulting in the deaths of 1,251 people, injuries to 3,618 others, and displacing over 1.2 million individuals.

Despite international warnings about the region being on the verge of a wider conflict due to Israel’s ongoing assaults on Gaza and Lebanon, Tel Aviv escalated the situation further by launching a ground invasion into southern Lebanon on October 1.
