EU unveils new sanctions on Russia for destabilizing activities

On Tuesday, the European Union (EU) announced new sanctions against Russia in response to the country’s hybrid threats.

The EU Council stated that this new framework will enable the EU to target individuals and entities involved in actions and policies by the Russian government that undermine the fundamental values of the EU, as well as the security and independence of its member states and international organizations.

Through this framework, the EU aims to combat various hybrid threats, including interference in electoral processes, attacks on democratic institutions, threats to economic activities, malicious cyber actions, and the exploitation of migrants.

Under the new measures, those designated will face asset freezes, and EU citizens and companies will be prohibited from providing them with funds. Additionally, individuals will also be subject to travel bans, preventing them from entering or transiting through EU territories.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell commented on the situation, stating that the new sanctions send a clear and unified message against Russia’s increasing hybrid activities. “Destabilizing actions towards the EU, its Member States, and partners come at a cost. Russia will not succeed in undermining our resilience and stability,” he said on X.
