Yasir Hussain revives theater in Pakistan with ‘Monkey Business’

Renowned Pakistani actor Yasir Hussain has made a compelling return to theater with his latest comedy play, Monkey Business. The production, currently staged at the Arts Council of Pakistan in Karachi, explores the hilarious misadventures of aspiring actors who unexpectedly find themselves entangled in phishing scams. With Yasir starring as Wasim, a cunning fraudster, the play has attracted a significant audience, but Hussain warns that relying solely on theater for a livelihood in Pakistan remains a challenge.

Having risen to prominence through plays by Anwar Maqsood, Yasir has spent the last decade focusing on TV and film. Despite his successful ventures in television with hits like Baandi and Badshah Begum, his love for theater endures. Monkey Business runs until April 21 in Karachi, followed by performances in Lahore and Islamabad.

Hussain candidly discussed the obstacles faced by Pakistan’s theater scene, including high production costs and limited profitability. “Creating theater here is incredibly expensive because of rent, lighting, and sound, which makes profitability almost impossible without government support,” he stated. He also highlighted the need for institutional backing to ensure the growth of theater as a viable art form.

Yasir has also been busy with projects under his banner, LO IQ Films, where he produced Paradise, starring his wife, acclaimed actress Iqra Aziz. However, he revealed that he is selective about sharing screen space with her, prioritizing her professional growth.

While Yasir continues to focus on both theater and production, he aspires to transition into filmmaking. “I enjoy storytelling and dream of producing films through LO IQ Films,” he shared. Yet, he remains grounded about the difficulties of carving a sustainable future for theater and entertainment in Pakistan.
