UNSC briefed on Pakistan-India standoff following Kashmir attack

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) convened a closed-door session on May 5, 2025, at Pakistan’s request, to address escalating tensions with India after the April 22 attack in Pahalgam, Indian-administered Kashmir, which resulted in 26 deaths. Pakistan’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar, briefed the 15-member council, including all five permanent members, on the situation.

Ambassador Iftikhar condemned the Pahalgam attack and denied Pakistan’s involvement, offering full cooperation in an independent international investigation. He criticized India’s unilateral suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, labeling it a violation of international law, and highlighted ongoing human rights concerns in Indian-administered Kashmir.

There was no official announcement or resolution at the end of the UNSC meeting. India characterized Pakistan’s efforts as unsuccessful, while Pakistan viewed the session as an opportunity to present its perspective.
