Trump exits Paris climate accord

President Donald Trump has officially signed an executive order on Monday to withdraw the United States from the Paris climate agreement. Alongside the order, Trump also signed a formal letter, which will be sent to the United Nations, explaining the rationale behind the decision to exit the international treaty.

This move marks the second time Trump has taken steps to pull the U.S. out of the accord. His initial withdrawal occurred in 2019, citing concerns over the agreement’s impact on American jobs and economic growth. The Paris climate agreement is a landmark international pact aimed at addressing global climate change by setting targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

In contrast, former President Joe Biden rejoined the agreement on his first day in office in 2021, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in combating climate change. Trump’s decision to once again leave the accord comes shortly after being sworn in for his second term as president.

The withdrawal reaffirms Trump’s longstanding stance on the agreement, which he believes imposes unfair constraints on the U.S. while benefiting other nations. The move is likely to stir significant international and domestic debate on the U.S.’s role in global climate initiatives.
