Supreme Court requests reports on missing persons case

The Supreme Court of Pakistan’s constitutional bench has called for reports from all relevant agencies regarding the ongoing missing persons case. Notices were issued to the Attorney General, Ministry of Interior, and other parties involved.

During the hearing, Justice Jamal Mandokhel expressed concern over the growing number of missing persons, stating that “statements alone will not resolve the issue.” He urged Parliament, as the highest authority, to take action and suggested convening a joint session to address the matter.

The Deputy Attorney General informed the court that the government is working on a resolution, with a sub-committee formed by the cabinet to provide recommendations on the issue.

Justice Hassan Azhar Rizvi inquired whether those who had returned from disappearance had provided any information about those responsible. Justice Mandokhel responded, noting that many of the returnees claimed they had gone to the Northern Areas for rest but did not provide further details.

Justice Naeem Afghan emphasized the need for bold action, stating, “Some missing persons cases tarnish the state’s image,” and adding, “A liberation war is being fought in the name of missing persons, and no one is willing to confront the system.”

The court adjourned the hearing until next week, with further discussions expected on the matter.
