Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Elizabeth Horst praised Ambassador Masood Khan for significantly enhancing US-Pakistan relations during his tenure as Pakistan’s envoy to the US.
“At this farewell dinner in honor of Ambassador Masood Khan, I want to highlight that the US-Pakistan relationship is currently at its strongest point in years, largely due to Ambassador Khan’s efforts to represent Pakistan and foster connections between Islamabad and Washington,” Horst remarked.
The event, attended by officials from the State Department and Department of Defense, underscored Khan’s contributions. Horst noted that despite occasional challenges, Khan’s leadership has established a framework conducive to open dialogues and collaboration.
Having served as Pakistan’s top diplomat in the US since February 2022, Khan is set to depart next week. Initially nominated by former Prime Minister Imran Khan in November 2021, his deputy will temporarily assume his duties until Ambassador Rizwan Saeed Sheikh assumes the role.
Horst credited Khan with stabilizing and expanding US-Pakistan ties, highlighting advancements in trade, health, energy, and climate cooperation. She commended Khan’s integrity, innovation, and hospitality, noting his role in hosting US government officials and fostering robust bilateral relations.
“You have hosted delightful lunches at your dining table for various US government officials and Capitol Hill members,” Horst remarked. “Your effectiveness has been remarkable, and it’s thanks to your efforts that we have reached this positive point in our relationship.”
Horst concluded by expressing confidence that Khan’s tenure has left the US-Pakistan relationship stronger than ever. “We all stand to benefit from the two years you’ve dedicated here. On behalf of the State Department, I extend my sincere thanks to you,” she added.
