Solar tube wells project advances in Balochistan

The federal government has taken a significant step towards improving energy efficiency in Balochistan by allocating Rs 14 billion to convert agricultural tube wells to solar power. Out of this, Rs 12.4 billion has already been disbursed, marking progress in an initiative aimed at supporting the region’s agriculture and reducing energy sector burdens.

The conversion project, managed by the Quetta Electric Supply Company (Qesco), involves transitioning from conventional electricity to solar power. This move is expected to alleviate the energy load, which has been a major issue in Balochistan. Reports reveal that the shift has already led to a 67.4 MW reduction in agricultural electricity demand. However, the region still faces challenges, including unpaid agricultural electricity bills and the issue of illegal tube wells.

There are over 27,000 subsidized tube wells and more than 10,000 illegal ones in Balochistan. To address the situation, both the federal government and Balochistan’s administration are collaborating, with costs being shared 70% and 30%, respectively. A compensation of Rs 2 million per tube well is being offered upon disconnection from conventional power.

Despite progress, concerns have been raised by Deputy Prime Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar over the slow pace of implementation. He urged Balochistan’s government and Qesco to expedite efforts, emphasizing the importance of reducing the growing circular debt in the energy sector. Third-party verification has been proposed to ensure proper execution of the project.

The plan not only promotes sustainable energy but also aims to tackle the increasing financial pressures on the energy sector. Balochistan’s farmers are hopeful that the project will bring long-term support and growth opportunities for the region’s agriculture.
