Sindh CM requests ADB support for Karachi’s water treatment facility

Sindh’s Chief Minister, Syed Murad Ali Shah, has formally sought assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to support the development of Karachi’s TP-4 water treatment facility. In a meeting with Xiaoqin (Emma) Fan, ADB’s Country Director, the two discussed a variety of ongoing ADB projects in Sindh, with particular emphasis on providing clean water, improving hygiene, and addressing the health needs of communities that have been severely impacted by recent floods.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister informed Fan that, in collaboration with ADB, the World Bank, and other international organizations, the Sindh government is making efforts to build secure housing for individuals displaced by the floods. He also stressed the urgent need for Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) projects to address the sanitation and drainage needs of the 2.1 million households affected by the floods. These projects are critical to preventing further health issues and ensuring that affected communities have access to basic services.

In addition, Shah appealed for ADB’s support for solar energy projects that would provide affordable electricity to these vulnerable communities. Many of the flood-affected areas struggle with high energy costs, making access to power a significant challenge. The ADB representatives assured the Sindh government of their full support for the water treatment and solar energy initiatives, pledging cooperation to help improve the living conditions of the affected populations.

This collaboration highlights a broader strategy to enhance infrastructure, improve public health, and provide sustainable energy solutions in regions affected by natural disasters.
