SCBA and government delay response to judicial interference raised in IHC judges’ letter

The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) is experiencing internal unrest over its response to a letter from six Islamabad High Court judges alleging interference in judicial matters by intelligence agencies. Similarly, the government is hesitant to provide a stance, considering it an internal matter of the judiciary. Despite the Supreme Court’s directive to submit proposals by April 25, the SCBA has not convened a meeting yet. SCBA President Shahzad Shaukat refuted claims of inaction, stating a consultative meeting is scheduled for May 8. The Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) has already passed a resolution seeking an impartial investigation into the allegations. The federal government is also reluctant to respond directly, viewing it as an institutional issue. Meanwhile, the Balochistan Bar Council and the Balochistan High Court Bar Association have filed petitions urging the Supreme Court to declare meddling in judicial affairs unconstitutional.
