Saudi Arabia takes the lead in calling for alternative Gaza plan

Saudi Arabia is leading the Arab world in opposing US President Trump’s controversial proposal for Gaza. Saudi Arabia called a gathering for February 20 to discuss the future of the region in response to the outcry over Trump’s intention to hand over authority of Gaza and its people. The discussions, which will take place before an Arab League gathering in Cairo, will include the heads of state from Egypt, Jordan, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.

Egyptian plans to organize a Gaza governance body apart from Hamas, international aid for rebuilding, and advancements toward a two-state solution are among the many proposed agenda items at the summit. This strategy aims to prevent the relocation of Palestinians, which is a touchy subject because it brings to mind the 1948 Nakba.

A rare moment of unity among Arab states against the US-backed plan is reflected in the proposal, which is spearheaded by Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MbS). The region’s synchronized efforts highlight the need for a settlement that respects Palestinian sovereignty while also balancing reconstruction and stability.

Separately, Hamas and Israel have announced a prisoner exchange deal that will see 369 Palestinians released in exchange for the release of three Israeli prisoners. This comes at a time when many are discussing possible future administration plans for Gaza and whether or not Hamas would be included.

The Riyadh summit showcased the Arab nations’ growing determination to address Trump’s divisive agenda, with the aim of preventing further regional instability and ensuring Gaza’s future aligns with the aspirations of its residents.
